Xiaomi Poco F1 Review: A powerful smartphone in a budget.

Rs 20.999 for a smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845? The Xiaomi Poco F1 plays very well on paper and we've reviewed it to tell you if it's the practical masterpiece it claims to be.

There is no doubt that there will always be an audience for very expensive smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Apple iPhone X. But the buyers' public is looking for more and more value and the promise of getting a phone that could cost more for Less.

There is also a certain set of assumptions about how much a phone should cost when it has specific components. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, for example, is considered the best mobile SoC in the world and, of course, it costs producers a fair amount to get their phones. As such, when the Asus Zenfone 5Z arrived with the chip set at a starting price of Rs 29,999, it raised a little eyebrows. And now, not even two months later, we have a smartphone with Snapdragon 845 SoC at a price of Rs 20,999.

Enter the Xiaomi Poco F1 (Poco F-one ... Pocofone ... do you understand?), A smartphone that defies all price logic and manages to surprise even the strongest technological cynics among us. With a price that starts from Rs 9,000 less than the Zenfone 5Z and an incredible Rs 14,000 less than the current premium OnePlus 6 for the equivalent variant, Xiaomi Poco F1 has its price as the largest USP. On paper, this has an incredible value for money and, of course, we wonder what the problem is. We have examined the Xiaomi Poco F1 to find out everything there is to know.

BEFORE EVERYTHING, WHAT IS POCO?

Lately we have met some silly names in technology, and Poco is one of them. A quick search on Google tells us that Little means "a little", which means that Xiaomi calls it "a small phone", which in my opinion is totally counterproductive to the cause. Apart from this, Poco is a sub-brand of Xiaomi, but the brand does not want to avoid identifying itself with its parent company. The phone and its packaging clearly mention Xiaomi and his logos.

And although Poco could have its own product development team, Xiaomi is advertising it. Submarines tend to be a successful or missing experiment if they are marketed separately, so Poco is not risking risks. Xiaomi's production and economies of scale, sales channels, research, development and reputation are too good to be abandoned, and Poco F1 is, for now, a Xiaomi phone without many Mi logos.

BEAST SPECIFICATIONS

Unless you're Samsung or Huawei, as an Android smartphone maker, you're probably buying components in the same places. Over the years, Xiaomi has established excellent relationships with component manufacturers and has a large number of components at its disposal, which it acquires at competitive prices due to the size of the orders it makes. The Xiaomi Little F1 seems to have been developed by digging into its huge stock of components and picking up the pieces it had in excess, which is probably the reason for its incredible price.
Little F1 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal memory. Also available is a 6.18-inch IPS LCD with Full-HD + resolution with an earlier unspecified version of Corning Gorilla Glass on top, a dual-SIM hybrid slot, USB Type-C for charging and data transfer, a 4000 mAh battery, Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 charger in the box and all the necessary connectivity options. There is also a dual-camera configuration of 12 megapixels + 5 megapixels in the back, a 20-megapixel front camera and a face release with infrared power.

COST EFFICIENCY-DUE TO IT'S MATERIAL WHICH IS PLASTIC.

Part of the reason why smartphones are expensive are the materials used in construction. And, for some reason, the most important specifications tend to go hand in hand with expensive materials in construction, such as metal and glass. It is here that Xiaomi showed some courage in disassociating himself with these two elements. So what you get is a phone that looks like a budget or a mid-range device, but it works like a showpiece. And nobody surprises us, because it is efficient.

That said, the Poco F1 Xiaomi feels a bit cheap even for its price, considering that some phones that cost less metal and glass items, the Honor Play and the Nokia 6.1 Plus are noteworthy examples. And unless you get the high-end Armored edition (sold at Rs 29,999), you're dealing with a phone that does not look or feel like what its price suggests. It is one of the main reasons and commitments that allows Xiaomi to sell the phone at its price; Basically, you're negotiating the compilation specifications here, and if you want both, you'll have to spend more.

Let's talk now about the armored edition. The flagship variant of Poco F1 is equipped with 8 GB of RAM, an internal memory of 256 GB and a back plate in Kevlar, which adds a touch of style and durability to the device. While the sides are still plastic, it has a bit more in the styling department, and the phone still costs Rs 14,000 less than OnePlus 6 with similar RAM and storage configuration. It's nice, but not as good as saying the Honor 10 or the Huawei Nova 3.

At the front, you get a modern Full-HD + IPS LCD screen with an aspect ratio of 18.7: 9, which is perfectly pleasing for most purposes and more than you would normally expect for the price. However, the phone does not take full advantage of the big screen in terms of design; There is a large chin, a huge notch on the top and a bit of tightening around, which tends to hinder the full screen feel. That said, you still have a large 6.18-inch screen, which is more than necessary for most things, from games to media and general use. It is also bright enough, gets the colors for the most part and works well.

                       SOFTWARE

As POCO F1 tries to be different, the biggest reminder that it's a Xiaomi smartphone is the fact that MIUI functions. Anyone who has used a Xiaomi phone will be immediately familiar with the things here, but there is a big change. POCO F1 runs POCO Launcher, a custom overlay placed on MIUI.

The initiator is not much different from the standard MIUI interface, with the same quick configuration and notification shadow, configuration menu, overall appearance and system application design. However, there is a big difference; Little Launcher is a double-layer user interface, with its own application drawer.

This is in stark contrast to MIUI, which until now has remained far from the application drawer. But last year Xiaomi adopted Android One way, which showed that the company was willing to experiment with features that it believes customers want. In Poco Launcher, you get an interesting drawer of applications that classifies not only applications by category but also by color. For example, if you can not remember the name of the application you want but you know the icon is green, you can simply press green and filter all the green apps for you.

Beyond that, you can also set transition effects, edit icon packs, and more. And as mentioned, MIUI veteran users will be happy to see the applications and tools known in their place, including the excellent application of Security, My Drop and the application of time, to name a few. All this works on MIUI 9.6 on Android 8.1 Oreo, and has already been confirmed that the phone will receive Android 9 Pie by the end of the year. Since the phone runs Android 8.1 Hours out of the box, the Project Treble support is already integrated, which will make the delivery of the software a bit 'simpler and, hopefully, faster.
